Noctilucence
Carmilla Sumantry
Description
Noctilucence is an 11-minute VR artwork exploring shadow work through a meditative, immersive environment set in a surreal alien landscape. It invites viewers into a dreamlike virtual desert where the unseen aspects of the self are externalised through an evolving, alien world. Drawing from the practice of shadow work and confronting and integrating repressed emotions, the piece transforms inner tension into an otherworldly visual journey. What begins as an ominous landscape of dark forms and grotesque organisms slowly transitions toward light and harmony, symbolising the process of acceptance and transformation.
At the heart of the environment drifts a luminous, jellyfish-like entity, its slow, hypnotic movement synchronised with a meditative sound bath composed by sound healer Lorri Rae Clark. This audio-visual dialogue grounds the viewer, encouraging introspection and emotional release. As the scene evolves, sharp, spiky flora soften into gentle organic forms, and shadowy figures reveal themselves as delicate architectural structures.
Through this metamorphosis, Noctilucence reflects a journey from fragmentation to unity, suggesting that light can only emerge through an embrace of darkness. The work speaks to a broader cultural longing for authenticity in an age of curated identities, using immersive digital media to invite stillness, compassion and reconnection with the self.
