Beautiful Land

Description

Beautiful Land is an interactive installation that interrogates flow as an engineered, non-neutral current: the precise moment where the organic movement of human migration collides with algorithmic sovereignty. Simulating an automated border control checkpoint in a fictional country, the work places visitors inside a data infrastructure designed to intercept bodies in motion. Navigation is strictly forward-only: like a real border crossing, there is no turning back.

As participants move through the interface, the system strips away personal agency, rejecting genuine human testimony and reducing individual lives to raw inputs. Three automated criteria: Productivity, Obedience and Celebrity, score, filter and freeze each applicant’s fluid identity into a permanent, unchangeable profile. What once moved freely across geographies is rendered legible, classified and immobile.

Responding to this year’s festival theme of FLOWS, Beautiful Land exposes the cold mechanics of interrupted circulation. In a world where algorithmic infrastructures govern who moves and who’s stopped, the installation reveals how contemporary border systems actively redirect, monetise and calcify the historical flows of human bodies, rendering the vulnerable person not a traveller, but a data point in a sovereign current.

CREDITS

The technical infrastructure, including voice cloning and generative text, was developed in collaboration with Dr. Mathias Funk (Full Professor, Department of Industrial Design, Eindhoven University of Technology). The lyrics for the Beautiful Land national anthem were co-written with Dr. Funk; the music was generated using Suno.ai.

Conceptually, this work draws profound inspiration from the speculative architectures and surveillance themes found in the following movies and TV series: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049, Minority Report, and Person of Interest.

Affiliations

The initial development of this project received partial support from Cultuur Eindhoven.

Dr. Yu Zhang is an artist and researcher based in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Born and educated in China, she has developed her practice across Europe and Asia, investigating the usually invisible systems governing movement, labour and intimate life, and what they do to the people who move through them.

Her work translates these effects, such as displacement, disorientation and resilience, into participatory, experiential installations that invite shared reflection through embodied interaction.
