Being, Between
Gustiele Fistarol & Patrick Ortiz
Description
Being, Between is an interactive installation that bridges distances and materialises the ephemeral traces that flow between bodies in an encounter. By connecting participants in different locations, the artwork captures their heartbeat data and transmits it through digital networks, weaving a shared, real-time experience.
These data streams are then translated into tactile vibrations, transforming a remote encounter into a dialogue between signal and flesh. The installation probes the emotional weight of our communication infrastructures. It questions the nature of digital culture: What remains of human connection when bodies speak through data? In an era of simulation, is the other truly there?

The artwork was produced during the Critical Data course held by Manuela Naveau, Interface Cultures department, Kunstuniversität Linz, Austria.

Gustiele Fistaról is a Brazilian transdisciplinary artist and researcher who works at the intersection of performance, creative writing and technology. Currently pursuing her master’s in Interface Cultures at the University of Arts Linz, she draws on her theatre background to navigate overlapping personal, political and ecological landscapes. Her practice is driven by a desire to embody the invisible, giving physical and visual form to unseen forces, as well as imagining acts of sympoiesis within the worlds we inhabit.
Patrick Ortiz is a Bolivian artist and computer scientist who began his career in contemporary dance. His fascination with online communication, language and virtual societies led him to explore information technologies and pursue a degree in computer science. This background allows his performances to become interactive, delving into themes of control and social roles mediated by technology. His work aims to create interactive spaces where artists and spectators alike play an active role in the performance.
