Description

This hands-on workshop explores the evolution of furniture design and making in Cyprus, from traditional craftsmanship and early twentieth-century production to industrial design and contemporary fabrication methods.

The session begins with a short presentation of research examining everyday objects and small-scale furniture as reflections of changing lifestyles, production methods and social aspirations in Cyprus. Particular attention is given to the ways local craftsmanship has evolved and adapted in response to industrialisation, new technologies and contemporary consumer culture.

Participants will then use this research as a starting point for making. Through guided design and digital fabrication activities, they will translate ideas, references and observations into visual and material experiments, exploring how elements of furniture-making traditions can be interpreted through contemporary tools and processes.

Moving between research, design and fabrication, the workshop creates a space to consider the relationship between past and present ways of making, not simply as a question of preserving tradition, but as an opportunity to reinterpret, transform and continue it through contemporary design practice.
