Flowing Narratives: Water, Memory and the City
Cyprus University of Technology - Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts
Description
Flowing Narratives: Water, Memory and the City is a collaborative project developed by fourth-year students from the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT).
As part of the project, students were introduced to the crankie machine, a term popularised by Peter Schumann of the Bread and Puppet Theater for a device formerly known as the moving panorama. Reintroduced by Schumann as a medium for critical and community-based storytelling, the crankie combines image, movement and performance to communicate collective experiences and social concerns.
Students explore how water shapes communities, labour, memory and everyday life in Limassol. Through field research, interviews, archival material and sound recordings collected across the city, they investigate the relationships between people, infrastructure and the environment.
The resulting works combine illustration, spoken word and environmental sound within the format of the crankie, transforming fragments of lived experience into collective narratives. Presented as moving panoramas, these works invite audiences to reflect on the hidden infrastructures, social relationships and systems that connect people, place and water.
