Form-finding of Minimal Surfaces
Advanced Computer-Aided Design | Department of Architecture UCY
Description
Form-finding of Minimal Surfaces refers to student projects developed in the undergraduate course Advanced Computer-Aided Design in the Department of Architecture at the University of Cyprus. The course focuses on using computer software and fabrication mechanisms as tools for architectural design, prototyping and communication. The course emphasises parametric-associative design as a generative tool to investigate and optimise architectural design solutions.
As part of the course, in the spring semester of 2026, the students began by geometrically analysing and redeveloping minimal surfaces found in nature. Then, building on their initial investigations, the students conceptualised, parametrically developed, and digitally fabricated their own shell structures using digital form-finding techniques based on a physics-based engine embedded in a parametric design environment to produce minimal surfaces at the local and global levels of design.
CREDITS
The models have been created at the FabLab UCY (coordinated by George Veshiaris).
These models have been produced under the supervision of Dr. Odysseas Kontovourkis, Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture, University of Cyprus.
