Meta[fluidic] Gems: Teardrop Painkiller
A Hands-on Bioart Workshop Exploring Tears, Crystals & Speculative Medicine
DETAILS
Date: Sunday, 25 October, 2026
Time: 10:00-16:00
Location: Thinker Maker Space (Digital Fabrication Workshop)
Facilitators: Marisa Satsia
Required Skillset: Curiosity, speculative thinking
Description
Developed as part of the Open Source Body project (2022–), this hands-on workshop invites participants to explore tears as both a biological substance and a material for artistic and speculative experimentation.
Moving between anatomy, bioart, speculative design and gastronomy, participants will investigate what tears contain, how they crystallise, and what new meanings might emerge when bodily fluids are treated as materials for making.
The workshop approaches the body as a system of flows, where molecules, fluids, emotions and information continuously circulate within and beyond us. Together, we will explore the material, gastronomical and medicinal nature of tears of pain and transform them into our own edible “teardrop painkillers”, while rethinking our liquid bodies as sustainable sources of medicine and care.

Marisa Satsia is a multidisciplinary artist and researcher based in Nicosia, Cyprus, whose practice thrives at the intersection of bioart, biodesign, experimental biology and transformative alchemical processes. Working from a hybrid studio that merges her artistic practice with a DIY laboratory, her research and practice draw on cyberfeminist, witchy approaches, including co-creation with living organisms, biotechnology-informed rituals, the study of living beings, magic and biofuturist speculation.
She embraces non-conformity and risk-taking, pursuing ethical, playful, non-exploitative experimentation that challenges conventional boundaries between biology, technology, art and design.
Marisa holds academic qualifications in fine art, medical art, and in the intersections of textiles, biology and digital fabrication. Beyond instructing workshops, indoctrinating and empowering others, she travels internationally to display her work, takes part in artistic residencies, and cultivates her DIY biolab, BioCuriosities Lab, as a living organism that activates hands-on experimentation, radical exploration and community-driven creative rebellion.
