UNDA

Clemens Hornemann

Description

In the reactive installation UNDA, digital communication, the invisible flow holding our modern world together, becomes physically tangible. In basins of black-coloured water, fine waves, interference patterns and turbulent upwellings emerge in response to mobile data use around the installation.

The system measures and converts the upload and download streams of nearby visitors’ devices into low-frequency sound waves. Played through submerged subwoofers, these translated waves make our intangible digital presence perceptible as flows of water. In this transformation from waves to waves, the digital and the physical cease to be separate realms, revealing a single reality where the virtual actively shapes our physical surroundings.

Clemens Hornemann

As a media artist, Clemens Hornemann examines the interactions that shape our perceptions and actions in an analogue-digital world. His works explore technological and ecological systems, phenomena and everyday curiosities in a poetic manner. In doing so, he frequently combines digital media and data with raw and biological materials. He’s a member of the interdisciplinary collective Latenter Raum.

Raised in Magdeburg, Germany, Hornemann earned a BFA in Media Art from Bauhaus-Universität Weimar under Prof. Ursula Damm, complemented by stays at institutions such as the Pratt Institute in New York. After completing his English-taught Master’s in Digital Media at the University of the Arts Bremen, he is currently developing various projects, participating in residencies and exhibitions, and leading workshops.
