Waste on the Island

Yaron Jorgen Balslev

Description

Waste is an integral part of modern society; whether we like it or not, it’s part of our human heritage. Viewing Cyprus through the lens of waste offers a unique way to explore the island’s challenges. With a historical perspective, we may find that the story of waste is much longer than we thought.

Waste on the Island explores how local rubbish was treated in Nicosia and Cyprus during colonial times. It traces the roots of the problem back over 100 years and highlights the different solutions introduced during British rule. The exhibition draws on new academic research that reveals unknown, surprising facts about Cypriot history.
